In memory of Officer James E. Stewart
Ridley Park Police Officer James Edward "Sunny Jim" Stewart died Aug. 22, 193 1, a week after he was struck by an alleged drunken driver while on patrol. He was 26 and had been a member of the department since January 1930.
Remembered as well-liked, he was secretary of the Chiefs of Police Association of Chester Pike and secretary of the Ridley Park Fire Co.
"Tis hard to understand how a fine young man like Jimmy should be taken away from his loved ones, but some day we'll understand," his chief, Burgess L. Norris Hall, said.
Stewart was buried in Chester County in what was referred to as a martyr's grave.
He was survived by his wife and two daughters.
The Sharon Hill motorist was held for manslaughter.
